Demo Bike: Lenz Lunchmoney Full Suspension Trail Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive Belt

This Lenz Sport LunchMoney is one of two new demo bikes that came about as a project to combine a Gates Carbon Drive belt drive and Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub with a full suspension frame. To accomplish this goal, we got in touch with Devin Lenz, who created one of the first - and still one of the only - suspension frames that is compatible with a tensioned single speed chain or belt. We worked with him on a few design details, then put in an order for a medium frame with 27.5+ wheels and an XL frame with 29+ wheels.

Lenz Sport is a small company in Colorado that makes mountain bikes for most types of trail use and ski bikes to keep "riding" through the winter. They were an early adopter of full suspension bikes with 29" wheels, and possibly the first to offer a long travel 29"-wheeled bike. They do all of their own manufacturing in house, including CNC machining the frame connection pieces, bending tubing, forming sheet metal into large multi-shaped down tubes, welding, and powder coating. Lenz takes great pride in their process because it allows them to have full control of their designs and offer custom builds. This video provides a look inside their factory.

Lenz's newest model, called the LunchMoney, is a cross between their Lunchbox trail bike, which has a traditional swingarm pivot slightly above and behind the BB shell, and MilkMoney single speed cross country bike, which uses Lenz's BB-concentric pivot. It has a more relaxed head angle, larger travel, and beefier tubing like the trail bike and the bottom bracket-concentric pivot like the XC bike to create a fun, belt-compatible trail machine.

The LunchMoney also gets a new main pivot design that uses sealed cartridge bearings for smoother operation, no creaking, and  better performance than with the old delrin bushing. We also worked with Devin Lenz to tweak this model to get both geometry and tire clearance right for running 3""plus" tires.

While we waited for the frames to arrive, we had our Wheel House build the wheels for these demo bikes using Sun Ringle MuleFUT rims, Sapim Race spokes, Hope front hubs, Rohloff rear hubs, and Panaracer FatBNimble tires.

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB is a great fit for a trail bike. Its durability and all weather performance provides dependability in any riding conditions. The internal shifting is sealed from the elements and kept out of harm's way. With the addition of the Gates Carbon Drive belt, which has a usable lifespan at least twice as long as a conventional chain (and typically much longer) and does not require lubrication, this is one of the most low maintenance and dependable drivetrains available.

We used these builds as test platforms for the Cinq5 Shift:R trigger shifting system, which we reviewed here: Tech Talk: Neil's Cinq5 Shift:R Rohloff Trigger Shifter ReviewThis shifting option for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB offers the familiar trigger feel that most trail riders are used to.

The system is comprised of two shift levers - one for each hand, with one shifting into a harder gear and the other into an easier gear - and a ratchet box that connects to the external shift mechanism, replacing the Rohloff cable box. The shift levers are simple spring loaded levers that pull and release a small length of cable, with the ratchet box being the heart of the system.

The ratchet box allows the shift lever to pull the small amount of cable, advance the SPEEDHUB to it's next gear, then release and reset. The system allows 1-2 gear changes per lever throw (2 when shifting in the same direction, 1 when changing direction due to the backlash in the system).

These Lenz LunchMoneys were an exciting project. We had been looking for ways to offer a full suspension build with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Gates Carbon Drive belt drivetrain for some time. Lenz worked with us to make it happen. The outcome is a fun, fully capable trail bike.

If you are looking for something like the Lenz LunchMoney and want to give it a try before you buy, give us a call to schedule a test ride.

We are excited to announce our new on-site fabrication shop. We will now be able to perform all of the standard steel or titanium frame modifications common on many of our builds as well as a comprehensive list of frame repairs. Having this workshop on site will reduce lead times for bikes being built in the Monkey Lab as well as expand our service offerings.

Our fabricator has great attention to detail and has over 10 years of experience doing everything from production welding to making custom parts in the machine shop to brazing ultra-thin frame tubes.

Our services include all of the jobs listed below plus others upon request. Work is performed on a time & materials basis, with an estimate provided prior to getting started. Most of the time we can estimate a job based on photos, but in some cases we will need to see the frame in order to make an accurate evaluation. Email us about bicycle frame modifications and repair.

Surly Troll with S&S Couplings, Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14, and Gates Carbon Drive Belt

This customized Surly Troll was built for a customer in Easton,Maryland who wanted a bike for travel touring and general utility use. He came to us looking to get Surly's newly released World Troller frame built up with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive. However, at the time, the World Troller frames had not started shipping, so we took a standard Surly Troll frame and modified it by adding S&S couplings, a belt drive splitter, and a new coat of white powder coat to get very nearly the same result with the additional feature of being belt compatible.

Surly is known for making affordable steel frames and bikes in a wide variety of models including road, cargo, mountain, plus-tire, fat, and touring bikes. The World Troller is the latest addition to their touring lineup and is identical to the standard Troll model save for the addition of the S&S couplers. This upgrade makes it more expensive than their other frames but still offers a good value relative to other travel specific frames.

The Surly Troll & World Troller are reliable touring frames intended for crossing borders.
These frames are designed with 26" wheels for ease of finding replacements parts when traveling around the world. The 26" wheels are also smaller for packing, which is especially important when you're when short on space and working to get your bike packed into an airline-legal case. It has cross country mountain bike geometry for predictable handling with generous standover height.

Ultimate versatility is a mainstay for most Surly frames and particularly on their touring frames. The Troll has both cantilever and disc brake mounts, horizontal rear-loading dropouts that can accommodate single speed, internal, or external gearing setup, a variety of cable guides to facilitate clean cable routing with any drivetrain setup, and lots of mounting points for attaching racks, H2O or cargo cages, and fenders. The belt drive modification gives this frame an additional setup up option.

The dropouts on the Troll have a dedicated slot for anchoring a Rohloff OEM2 axle plate and threaded holes for installing one of Surly's cargo trailers. Tire clearance is rated at 2.7", so it can be setup with anything from a smoother, road-touring tire to a large volume plus tire. The included fork comes standard with low- and mid-blade rack and fender bosses plus 3-hole Anything Cage mounts for even more carrying options.

In order to use a belt with most frames, the frame needs to be designed so that the rear triangle can open to allow the belt to fit into the rear triangle. If the frame wasn't designed for it, there are frame modifications that can be done to take a frame made to put a chain through it and turn it into a frame that can open to be belted. In this case, we added a simple tube splitter from Paragon Machine Works in the seat stay. The splitter replaces a section of the stay and is held together by two bolts. When the bolts are taken out, the stay can be flexed open to pass a belt through.

In addition to the tube-splitter, the main frame was cut in half and S&S couplers were installed to make checking the bike with airlines more affordable. The threaded couplings allow the main triangle of the bike to be disassembled at the top tube and downtube, allowing the two pieces to fit into an airline-legal case.

While the frame was getting modified, we had our Wheel House get to work on a custom wheelset. Sturdy Velocity Cliffhanger rims were build onto a Shutter Precision to power the head and tail lights and a USB charging device and a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub in the back. Both wheels were finished off with the Schwalbe Marathon Mondial Tires.

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB is a great fit for a touring bike. Rohloff's hubs are widely recognized as the most reliable drivetrain choice for long distance touring - a critical requirement for this customer's build. On an unsupported tour that can lead into remote and unknown areas, he didn't want to risk being stranded far from a bike shop with drivetrain problems. With the addition of the Gates Carbon Drive belt, which has a usable lifespan at least twice as long as a conventional chain (and typically much longer) and does not require lubrication, this drivetrain is hassle-free and provides security and piece of mind for heading out on tour.

This customer wanted his bike to allow him to explore the world without needing to rely on outside sources for power or mechanical aid. The dynamo hub allows him to power the front and rear light or charge his phone, GPS, or cache battery through the SineWave Cycles Reactor USB charging device. Dynamo hubs with a USB charger are great tools to take with you touring to stay plugged-in when you are off the grid.

The rest of this build was put together with comfort and durability in mind. Ergon GP-4 grips provide hand comfort for long days on the bike, and the Crane Creek Thudbuster suspension seatpost with a Brooks saddle smooths out the bumps in the road.

Super Commuter: Independent Fabrications Club Racer with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14, Gates Carbon Drive, and Dynamo Set-up

            $

This custom super commuter is now climbing the hills of San Francisco, CA. The customer already rode with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub and Gates Carbon Drive belt, and while he really loved the drivetrain, he was less happy with the original frame. So, he came to us to discuss options for moving the Rohloff and belt over to a new frame. Besides wanting to re-use his drivetrain, the main goal of the bike was quick, responsive handling like his road bike to add a little excitement to his daily commute.

Independent Fabrications was high on his list due to the many choices available through their custom program, and he ultimately decided to go with a stainless steel Club Racer frame with a 3/4 paint job. We worked with him to spec the bike with commuting essentials, then dialed in the fit and got in touch with IF to work through the frame details.

Independent Fabrication in Newport, New Hampshire, builds all of their bikes to order. They are well known for both quality of frame construction and extensive custom paint capabilities.

Given the level of customization for this bike, Independent Fabrications was the perfect frame company for the build. They worked with us to use the Paragon Machine Works PolyDrop for Gates Carbon Drive belt insertion and built the frame with an eccentric bottom bracket for easy tensioning of the belt. They also integrated wiring for the dynamo-powered taillight, added Rohloff specific cabling, and gave it the custom paint job our customer wanted.

As the frame was being built, the Cycle Monkey Wheel House got to work. We specified Velocity Dyad rims for their blend of strength, durablility, and weight and used double-butted Sapim Race spokes with Sapim brass nipples for a solid, daily use wheelset.

For the front wheel, the customer chose a Schmidt SON28 dynamo hub for self-powered lighting of both the front and rear lights. This top-quality dynamo ensures that the bike will light up every time he pedals, so he can head for any destination safely with the road well lit and never need to think about charging a battery.

The rear wheel was outfitted with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14, which is a great fit for any commuter because of its durability, wide gear range, and consistent, maintenance-free shifting. With the addition of the Gates Carbon Drive belt, this is one of the most low maintenance and dependable drivetrains available. The belt has a usable lifespan at least twice as long as a conventional chain (and typically much longer) and does not require lubrication or cleaning.

This set-up is perfect for a hassle-free commute every day of the week. Whether you are heading across town or out of town, you can get on and get going without worrying whether the shifting is working.

In order to make this Club Racer the super commuter our customer wanted, we selected top-shelf components to complement the frame and provide a comfortable and reliable set-up.

This Independent Fabrications Club Racer turned out to be just the thing our customer wanted to ride everyday. IF's style and attention to detail is exemplified in this build.

Are you looking for the perfect commuter? Do you want a new bike that meets all of your needs and that you love to ride?  Give us a call - we can help you make it happen.

Soma Sandworm Fatbike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14, Gates Carbon Drive Belt, and Lauf Leaf Spring Fork

            $

            0

San Francisco-based Soma Fabrications recently sent us a production version of their first fat bike frame, the Sandworm. This is a great affordable option for a Rohloff- and belt-compatible fat bike. The frame is designed with several key features to run a Rohloff-Gates Carbon Drive belt drive train.

We built this Sandworm up as demo with a Lauf Carbonara leaf spring fork. Assembly was very straight forward. With only a few quick spins on it, the geometry feels very neutral and familiar. This demo is size XL.  Let us know if you're in the area and want to take a spin on it.

Previously, we built up a prototype version for form, fit, and function validation. Throughout the assembly, we made notes on the ease of assembly and integration with the Rohloff-belt drive train.

The production version of the Sandworm evolved based on lessons learned from the prototype, while maintaining the earlier tube shape and geometry.

The prototype was built with a 135mm offset rear triangle, which worked with the original SPEEDHUB 500/14, while the production version made the change to 170mm symmetric spacing and accepts the SPEEDHUB XL.

The sliding dropouts provide the tensioning method for the belt. On the prototype version, the dropouts served a dual function, providing a split in the frame to accept the belt via an overlapping sandwich construction that was held together by the bolts that keep the sliding inserts in place.

Belts are now installed through a seatstay splitter as seen on all Soma models with sliding dropoutsand like we commonly install when doing belt-drive modifications.

The Sandworm is the fourth bike in the Soma lineup that is Rohloff and belt drive compatible with sliding dropouts and seat stay splitters.  With these options, Soma has a range of affordable Rohloff/belt drive option that covers most types of adventure riding.
            • Sandworm: 26" Fat Bike
            • Juice: 29'er Hardtail
            • B-Side: 27.5"/650B Hardtail
            • Wolverine: 700c Cross/Gravel/Adventure Road/Bikepacking
The Sandworm accepts the wider, fat bike-specific Rohloff SPEEDHUB XL, while the other three models use the standard SPEEDHUB 500/14.  All of these models use threaded bottom bracket shells for compatibility with a wide range of crank sets and ISO disc brake mounts for using our Monkey Bone with Rohloff's OEM2 axle plate.  Our demo bike is set up with the standard Rohloff Twist shifter on flat bars.

On the whole, the Soma Sandworm seems like a solid frame design with features that work well with Rohloff and Gates belt drive, so we give it a Monkey Lab stamp of approval.

Gravel / Adventure Road Bike: Shand Cycles Stoater with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive

            $

            0

This Shand Cycles Stoater adventure road bike was built for a local customer in San Francisco. He wanted a no fuss commuter/adventure bike that was fun and comfortable to ride to help him get back into a regular riding routine. A friend of his had worked with us to get a Rohloff-equipped touring bike and raved about the drivetrain, so he decided to get in touch with us to test ride the internal gear hub and Gates belt and to discuss potential build options. He really like the aesthetic of the Shand Stoater demo bike we have at the office, so we based the build around this frameset.

Shand Cycles is a small bike manufacturer located in central Scotland producing steel frames and bikes inspired by their local roads, trails, and mountains. Most of their frames are built to accept multiple drivetrains, including our drivetrain of choice, through use of interchangeable dropouts and flexible bolt-on cable guides. They have years of experience building frames for use with the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and like us, love the dependability and performance it has to offer.

Shand also offers custom geometry upon request, which we utilized in this case to fit this customer's shorter legs and longer torso. When deciding on the final geometry, we also took into account the customer's request to be able to switch from riding with flat bars to drop bars. We came up with setup that gives him appropriate standover clearance, a comfortable handlebar position level with the seat, and the ability to use both styles of bars by switching between a long stem with flat bars and a shorter stem when he wants to use drop bars.

Once we ordered the custom frame from Shand, our Wheel House got started on building custom wheels to go with it. Both wheels are laced to Velocity Dyad rims using Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples. The front hub is a Schmidt SON28 dynamo to power the lights, and the rear hub is a Rohloff Speedhub. Both wheels are wrapped in Schwalbe's fast rolling Marathon Supreme tires, which still have a bit of grip to take on the dirt roads planned in this bike's future.

The rest of this Stoater was finished with the flat bar set-up the customer wanted to ride first. Soma Odin bars offer more back sweep than typical mountain bike bars for increased hand comfort, especially when combined with Ergon's GP1 grips. Selle Anatomica's X Series saddle is comfortable on long or short rides with or without padded cycling shorts.

This customer came to us looking for an all around bike to use on and off road. He wanted it to have a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive belted drivetrain, and loved the look of the Shand Stoater. He had special needs that required custom geometry, and with Shand, we were able to meet them and build him a bike that offered options for cockpit set-up while still fitting him just right. This bike met all his expectations and gave him a bike to commute on and use to explore.

If you are looking for a versatile bike to use as your daily commuter and gravel grinder when you're off the clock, consider the Shand Stoater.  Check out our Stoater bike packages or give us a call for more information.

Commuting / Touring: Co-Motion Americano with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive

            $

            0

This Co-Motion Americano was built for a customer in Corpus Christi, Texas. He had been riding on a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 for many years that he loved and wanted to move it to a new bike. He rides to work everyday and wanted to get a great commuter with dynamo powered lights and a frame that was sturdy enough to be used for moderately loaded touring. He was also excited about using a Gates Carbon Drive belt. Co-Motion's top quality, American made, Americano model covered all of his requirements, so we used this as the starting platform.

Co-Motion Cycles is a company who specializes in building bikes for touring, commuting, and tandems at their factory in Eugene, Oregon. They are a prominent supplier of Rohloff bikes in the US, offering several complete touring bikes equipped with these high quality gear hubs and offer custom geometry, S&S couplings, and a wide variety of paint options upon request.

The Americano model is a steel touring frame built for 700c tires with clearance for 35mm tires and fenders. It comes with rack, fender, and three bottle-cage mounts. It has stable touring geometry that also makes it a great everyday bike.

With the frame figured out, our Wheel House got to work on a pair of custom wheels. We used one of our favorite commuting rims, the Velocity Dyad and double butted Sapim Race spokes with Sapim brass nipples.

Up front, a Schmidt SON28 dynamo hub powers the Busch & Mueller Lumotec Luxos headlight and Toplight Line Plus taillight. In the back, a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 provides reliable all condition shifting duties.

The rear wheel was outfitted with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14, which is a great fit for any commuter because of its durability, wide gear range, and consistent, maintenance-free shifting. The SPEEDHUB's sealed shifting system protects shifting components from the grime, mud, dirt and other contaminants that bikes are often ridden through. With hardened steel internal gear wheels and a 526 percent gear range, the SPEEDHUB adds versatility and dependability for all forms of riding conditions.

With the addition of the Gates Carbon Drive belt, which has a usable lifespan at least twice as long as a conventional chain (and typically much longer) and does not require lubrication, this is one of the most low maintenance and dependable drivetrains available. For this customer we used a larger front cog. He rides mostly flat land on his daily rides and this will give him the gear ratio to make the most of those flats. This set-up is perfect for a hassle-free commute every day of the week. Whether you are heading across town or out of town, you can get on and get going without worrying whether the shifting is working.

The HubBub bar end adaptor allows the use of the Rohloff twist shifter on a conventional road drop handlebar. It installs into the end of the handlebar with a 6mm allen key, and the Rohloff shifter slides over the shaft and tightens in place as usual. For more information on all the options available for shifting the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 go to our blog that describes them in detail by clicking here.

This customer was looking for a high quality, reliable commuting and touring bike, and this Co-Motion Americano provided just what he was looking for.

Are you looking for a great commuter that will be ready for you to get on everyday without any fuss? Do you want it to have a custom set-up and dynamo powered lighting? Give us a call. We can help you find the right frame and build-kit to make your new ride everything you want it to be.

Expedition / Adventure / Backcountry Touring: Lynskey Fatskey Fat Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XL

            $
            0
            0

A customer from Hickory, NC called us to discuss building up a new bikepacking rig. He wanted to use 29+ wheels with a maintenance-free and dependable Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive belt drivetrain to take on the Great Divide and other adventure touring routes.

There are limited options available for dedicated 29+ bikes to begin with, and he wanted something lighter than the popular Surly Krampus and ECR steel options. Fortunately, most fat bike frames will accept 29+ wheels, so he was able to use the lightweight titanium Fatskey frame from Lynskey. He sent us the frame and Carver O’Beast carbon fork that he had already picked up, and we worked with him to pick the rest of the components for the build and put everything together.

Lynskey is a company out of Tennessee that has a long history of building titanium bikes for all types of riding. Their fat bike is named Fatskey and has a unique looking frame thanks to Lynskey’s signature twisted tubes. It offers clearance for tires up to 4" wide, has slider dropouts for belt or chain tension adjustment, has a tapered head tube with integrated bearing cups, and comes with rack mounts for fat bike adventures.

While they are mostly focused on production bikes, Lynskey does offer a custom program for those times when their production versions don't quite meet customers' needs. We worked with them to make a special version of the Fatskey that has Rohloff-specific cable routing, belt drive split point, and meets the Rohloff rear triangle stiffness requirement for use with a belt drive. To achieve the needed rear triangle stiffness, we omitted the plate material that is normally installed on the right chain stay just behind the bottom bracket shell and used a complete chain stay tube like the left side; we also had them increase the wall thickness.

The build began in our Wheel House with a set of custom wheels. To keep weight down, we used a pair of carbon rims, Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes, and alloy nipples. Front hub is an Industry 9 Torch and rear hub is a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XL. Both wheels got Maxxis Chronicle tires setup tubeless.

This customer came to us wanting a light and comfortable bike for long days in the saddle to tour off-road with. He wanted the ultimate drivetrain so he could head out without worrying about mechanical failure or trail born damages. Once finished this Lynskey Fatskey took him from Canada to Mexico on the Great Divide route without fail. The Fatskey came out just how we'd hoped and gave him everything he was looking for in a new ride.

Do you like the look of this Fatskey? We have some in stock. Give us a call to get your Lynskey Fatskey dream build started.

This custom carbon fiber Calfee Design Luna went to a customer in Juneau, Alaska. He was looking for a bike that he could use for his 15 mile daily commute as well as some weekend gravel road rides. He wanted it to be lightweight, versatile, dependable, and built-up with all the bells and whistles available for a great commuter.

He and his wife have been very happily riding on a carbon fiber Calfee tandem with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub and Gates Carbon Drive belt drivetrain for several years, and he wanted the same reliability on his new commuter. He liked the idea of having Calfee build him another frame and ultimately decided on the Luna model. We worked with him to outfit the bike with dynamo hub-powered front and rear lighting, hydraulic disk brakes, fenders, and a rear rack/pannier system for a properly outfitted commuter.

Calfee makes their frames in-house in their shop outside Santa Cruz, CA and has been a major pioneer in carbon fiber technologies. They offer a wide variety of custom options and have been making frames to accommodate the Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Gates Carbon Drive belt for many years.

Calfee's experience makes it easy to work with them to provide high quality dedicated builds to meet our customer's needs. The Luna model is their most affordable and among most durable models, making it a perfect commuter option.

While the frame was being hand crafted in Santa Cruz, our Wheel House built up a set of custom wheels. We spec'd Velocity Dyad rims for their strength and mid-range weight laced them with double-butted Sapim Race spokes and Sapim brass nipples. Up front, a Schmidt SON28 dynamo hub will power front and rear lights.

In the back, Rohloff's SPEEEDHUB 500/14 provides reliable shifting in all weather conditions.

This Calfee Luna adventure road bike was built to be the ultimate commuter and give our customer the option of heading off road to explore. He wanted it to be light weight and run the ultimate drivetrain, and with Calfee, we were able to deliver.  The rest of the build was selected to make his rides hassle-free and dependable.

If you are looking for a top shelf commuter that's ready to hit the road every time you head out the door, give us a call.  We are here to help make your dream bike a reality.

Salsa Mukluk Fat Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XL

A couple in Maine contacted us to build up a his-and-hers set of fat bikes, both with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XL internal gear hubs. Living on the East Coast, they deal with with lots of snow and wanted bikes ready to handle the winter riding conditions they face every year. Both wanted a comfortable ride that would need very little maintenance. He chose a Ventana El Gordo, and she picked this Salsa Mukluk, which is a great platform for building a Rohloff bike.

Salsa bills the Mukluk as their "exploration fatbike." It is a multi-purpose bike that can be built with a suspension fork for more trail-focused use or with their rigid Bearpaw fork with three-pack braze-ons for added carrying capacity and a more bike-packing focus. Three sets of bottle cage bosses provide ample water-carrying capacity. Salsa's adjustable Alternator dropouts make single speed or geared setups possible and allow the frame to be set-up with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 without a chain tensioner.

Every build starts in our wheel house while the frame and parts are being sourced. In this case Surly Rolling Darryl rims were laced to a Hope Pro 2 Fatsno hub in the front and a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XL in the rear using Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples. Both wheels received 3.8" Surly Knard tires.

In keeping with our focus on function and comfort, we selected a Jeff Jones Loop H-Bar with ESI latex foam grips and Terry Butterfly saddle mounted to a Cane Creek Thudbuster suspension seatpost.

This couple came to us wanting a bike to fit each of their individual needs as riders, but wanted the bikes to be compatible and capable of keeping them together on the trail. This Salsa Mukluk with Rohloff SPEEDHUB XL with stand up to everything they plan to encounter and the rest of the build will keep her comfortable and able to pack what she needs for their rides.
If you are looking for a bike that is ready to take on adventure with you, give us a call and we can help you make it happen.

Cyclocross / Gravel Grinder: Traitor Cycles Crusade with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive

A Kent, Washington-based customer contacted us to talk about building a commuter/dirt road exploration bike with our signature Rohloff/Gates drivetrain. Already a Rohloff rider, he was excited about the simplicity, dependability, and longevity that the combination of the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub and Gates Carbon Drive belt offers. He liked Traitor Cycles Crusade frame for it's cyclocross geometry, affordable price, adjustable dropouts, and ability to run a tapered carbon fork. He sent us his Rohloff wheel, and we built it into a cool new bike.

Traitor Cycles is a Pacific Northwest-based company that produces a variety of affordable steel bikes. They make models for geared, single-speed, or fixed commuters, cyclocross racing and riding, mountain rides, and touring bikes. The Crusade is designed as a cross racing machine, but its geometry works well for other uses such as gravel, commuting, and bike packing.

Traitor uses a simple pivoting dropout design on the Crusade, which gives it a lot of setup flexibility. This feature is ideal for single-speed, Schlumpf 2-speed cranks, or Rohloff 14-speed internal gear hubs, as it provides a means of chain or belt tensioning without needing to add a separate tensioner. We added a tube splitter in the right seat stay to make it belt compatible and sent it out to our local powder coater for a bright green finish.

While the frame was being modified with the belt-splitter, we got to work on building a custom front wheel to complement the customer-supplied Rohloff rear. We went with a Velocity Aileron rim and double butted Sapim Race spokes with brass nipples.  Both wheels received Schwalbe's puncture resistant Marathon Mondial tires.

If you are interested in having a frame modified to ride with a Gates Carbon Drive or are interested in getting a dedicated build like this one, just give us a call.

Renovo Wood Commuting/Light Touring Bike with Rohloff Speedhub and Belt Drive

              $
              0
              0

We assembled this unique bike for a local customer in San Francisco, CA. He wanted a classy bike to commute to work on and go on weekend rides throughout the Marin Headlands. Since he works in the solar energy field, he was drawn to renewable aspects of a wood frame. He commissioned the frame through Renovo and worked with us on parts spec and build up once the frame arrived. The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub, Gates Carbon Drive belt system, and Schmidt dynamo hub cater to his technical background as well as being "green" due to the fact that they are extremely long lasting components which do not require frequent replacement.

Renovo has been making wood bike frames since 2007 for just about all types of riding. Wood as a frame material is supposed to provide a very smooth ride by flexing just enough to absorb small bumps while remaining stiff during pedaling and cornering. Renovo offers various customization options through their custom frame program, including internal cable routing for the rear brake and Rohloff shift cables as seen on this frame. Their frames allow a belt to fit into the rear triangle by default due to the bolted connection between the dropout and seat stay, and we used a Trickstuff Exzentriker thread-in eccentric bottom bracket to provide chain tension.

For wheels, we used Velocity's Aileron rims and laced them to the Rohloff and Schmidt hubs using Sapim Race double butted spokes and red alloy nipples to match the hubs, headlight, and headset. The Aileron rims are wide and relatively tall aluminum road/cyclocross rims that were designed for easy tubeless setup, which matched up nicely with the Hutchinson Sector tubeless tires.

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 is ideally suited for commuter and city bikes. As bikes that typically lead a hard life but must be reliable to be of service, the SPEEDHUB is a natural choice for the drivetrain. The only maintenance this drivetrain typically needs is an annual oil change, which can easily be done by the rider at home. This helps avoid time consuming service visits, downtime while the bike is at the shop, and most of the frequently needed replacement parts and adjustments. The SPEEDHUB remains reliable for years and years and rarely requires serious maintenance. Rohloff's hubs take most of the interruptions out of the equation of owning a transportation bike while still offering the ability to change gears and have an efficient drivetrain. The Gates Carbon Drive belt system compliments the Rohloff hub as a maintenance-free drive member with a long lifespan.

The rest of the build was mostly top quality parts selected with comfort, quality & reliability, and fit & finish in mind.

This build came out great, and the owner was very pleased when he came to pick it up.  If you’re looking for a new commuter or city bike of your own, contact us to start a conversation about what we can put together for you!

              Lightness

Less is more. The less weight you need to handle, the more fun it is. TT designs products with weight optimization in mind to give you the features you really need without weighing down the trailer.

              Suspension

Trailer Suspension - Singletrailer - Tout Terrain

Over 50 % of vibrations are reduced by an integral suspension system in a child's trailer. Tout Terrain uses air-spring shocks commonly used on high quality bikes which offer considerably enhanced comfort in comparison to systems without suspension. It is not just in off-road applications that suspension is in demand. When you ride with your trailer over curbstones, cobblestones, or through potholes the suspension absorbs harsh impacts and vibrations, and guarantees the greatest possible protection and comfort for your child.

              Safety belt with 5-point harness

On the Singletrailer, a 5-point harness system is an integral part of the safety features of the trailer. In case of an accident, this 5-point harness system provides more security for your child within the trailer, compared to simple lap-belt systems used in most trailers.

              Comfort

Apart from the suspension, the design of the chassis drives performance and comfort. The single wheeled construction of Tout Terrain trailers improves ground contact, reduces unsprung weight, minimizes impacts on the passengers and increases the security during the ride. Due to the one wheel design, the trailer always follows the bike, has less rolling resistance and therefore offers a much wider riding spectrum without sacrificing safety.

              Ease of Installation

The hitch quickly links the trailer to your bike. This design reduces play at the joint to guarantee a smooth ride for both pilot and passenger. Premium bearings guarantee a great long-term functionality.

This 9:ZERO:7 Slider is a build we did for a customer in Herndon, Virginia. He wanted an adventure fat bike that would stand up to anything he might encounter off the beaten path. Low maintenance and dependability were top priorities. He had already purchased the frame set, so he sent it to us to build up with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub and Gates Carbon Drive belt drive. With this extremely durable drivetrain, a rigid fork, and large volume tires for comfort and traction, this bike can handle just about any terrain with almost no maintenance.

Named after the only area code in all of Alaska, the 9:ZERO:7 fat bike brand is an off-shoot of Chain Reaction Cycles in Anchorage, Alaska. The brand gained a global customer base after they started selling fat bikes through their website, Fatbikes.com, and now offers several aluminum and carbon models.

The current 9:ZERO:7 Slider frame is aluminum and has symmetric, 170mm-spaced sliding dropouts. It represents an evolution of their original Slider frame, which had 135mm dropout spacing and an offset rear triangle. Quick release dropout inserts make the frame compatible with Rohloff's Speedhub XL fat bike hub, while the adjustable nature of the dropouts combined with a joint where the dropout connects to the seat stay make it possible to install and tension a belt.

The Slider is designed to be rigid-specific and has a fairly upright seating position, longer chain-stays, rack/fender/ water bottle mounts, and full cable housing, which make it a comfortable, functional off road adventure bike.

Once all the details of the build were in place we had our WheelHouse get started on these wheels. The customer chose the 100mm wide Surly Clown Shoe rims to be built onto a Hope Pro 2 Fatsno front hub and Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XL rear hub.  Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples keep the hubs suspended in the rims and Surly Bud and Lou 26" x 4.8" tires finish things off.

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB XL works well for mountain biking and is especially well-suited for fat biking. The SPEEDHUB's sealed shifting system protects shifting components from the deep sand, mud, dirt, and other contaminants that fat bikes are often ridden through. With a 526 percent gear range and hardened steel internal gear wheels, the SPEEDHUB provides versatility and dependability in demanding riding conditions.

With the addition of the Gates Carbon Drive belt, which has a usable lifespan at least twice as long as a conventional chain and does not require lubrication, this is one of the most low maintenance and dependable drivetrains available.

To finish off this build, we used parts with comfort and simplicity in mind. A Jones Loop H-Bar offers multiple hand positions for all day riding comfort, especially when combined with ESI Extra Chunky grips. Avid BB7 Mechanical disc brakes and easy to setup and work on, and are not affected by extreme cold temperatures.

This customer came to us with a specific frame and type of riding in mind, wanted a Rohloff and Gates Carbon Drive system, but wasn't sure how to fill in the missing pieces. We talked through options with him and came up with what we thought would work best for him. He now has an adventure fat bike to meet his needs and one that he knows he can depend on. If you are looking for a bike like this one or have a different idea for your next build and need help making the last component decisions? Give us a call. We are here to help you make your next build meet all your needs.

              Introduction

For 2017, we have revamped our Ventana El Gordo Fat Bike packages.  These bikes have proven to be solid performers for many types of riding over the past year.  Customers have used them as traditional winter fat biking, expeditions across deserts, year round trail riding, beach riding, and off road touring. We made updates based on new parts introduced in the past year combined with feeback on what has worked out best long term.  The frame, Rohloff SPEEDHUB XL gear hub, and Gates Carbon Drive belt system carry forward.  See chart below for details.

              Frame Overview

We worked with Ventana Mountain Bikes USA to create a special Cycle Monkey edition of their US-made El Gordo fat bike frame. The Cycle Monkey edition features dedicated cable routing for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB and stealth dropper seatposts. These frames are also belt drive compatible through Ventana's clever adjustable dropout system for the most maintenance-free fat bike drivetrain available. Options are available to build the bikes up with a suspension fork and dropper seatpost or with a rigid fork and post.

                A Look Inside Syntace

                $

Walk into Syntace HQ in Tacherting, Germany, and you won’t see a showroom, products on display, or a flashy storefront. You’ll see a workshop, a design team, a CNC mill, and testing machines. Lots and lots of testing machines.

Over the last decade, Syntace hasn’t concerned itself with bright colors or loud graphics. Syntace’s only focus has been to engineer the strongest, most durable, and overall highest performing components on the market.

                Engineering & Testing
Anyone who has spent days on end touring, bikepacking, or riding blown out bikepark trails knows how badly fatigue can impact a rider. For this reason, Syntace engineers vibration damping qualities and compliance into their seatposts and handlebars. The components are stiff enough to provide responsive handling while still being compliant enough to keep fatigue at bay.

But Syntace doesn’t just stand out solely because of their design, they stand out because their engineering is evaluated time after time, with a level of meticulousness that borders on obsessive.

A percentage of every production batch that comes in from Taiwan is tested to the point of failure at Syntace’s Taiwanese factory, and again at their German headquarters. If the data from both of these tests does not match historical performance, the batch won’t be allowed to reach consumers. And since all of the testing is done in house, Syntace can always be sure that their own product testing is consistent.

When pushed to the limits that would ordinarily warp or snap other components, Syntace’s engineered compliance keeps their components intact. Not surprisingly, Syntace is confident enough in their components to back them up with a ten year warranty.

Ride with peace of mind knowing that your components will be performing for years to come.

Super Commuter: Co-Motion Camino with Schlumpf Speed Drive

                $
                0
                0

This bike was built for a customer in San Francisco, CA who had a very specific idea of what he wanted in a commuter bike. He was looking for a clean, minimalist aesthetic and the zippy, responsive ride he was used to on his road bike in a fixed gear package. He also wanted to have more than one gear to handle the hills in San Francisco without getting off the bike and flipping the back wheel around to a different sprocket size. Disc brakes were a requirement for stopping on the way back down those same hills, as was a Gates Carbon Drive belt system for no drivetrain maintenance.

He liked the options that Co-Motion offered, and the Camino model covered all the bases. We worked with them to customize the frame to accept a belt and then installed a Schlumpf Drive internally-geared cranksets to provide two gear choices without adding any clutter and maintain the simplistic look of a single-gear bike. A rich paint color makes this bike stand out.

Co-Motion Cycles is a company that specializes in building steel and aluminum drop bar bikes at their factory in Eugene, Oregon. They offer options for just about any type of riding with said bar shape and offer custom geometry and a wide variety of paint options upon request. They are quite familiar with the Gates belt drive system and internal gearing as a prominent supplier of bikes equipped with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hubs and now also the Pinion gearbox.

The Camino model is a disc brake-equipped steel road frame built for 700c wheels with clearance for 28mm tires and fenders. It comes with rack, fender, and bottle-cage mounts and has classic road bike geometry. Reynolds 853 tubing keeps it light and offers a comfortable ride. In stock form, the Camino is only available as a chain-driven derailleur bike.

In order to meet this customer's requests, we asked Co-Motion to modify the drive side dropout so a belt could be installed in the rear triangle and to build the frame with an eccentric bottom bracket so the belt could be properly tensioned.

Schlumpf cranks requires no external shifter. The shift is actuated by hitting a discrete button on the crank arm, and thus leaves the handlebars and downtube free and clear of any derailleur, cables or shifters. Schlumpf offers three different options of their gearing system - High Speed Drive, Speed Drive, and a Mountain Drive - each with a different internal ratio change.

The Speed Drive model was selected as the best fit for this build. With a 1.65 overdrive ratio, this model offers a smooth pedaling transition between the two gear options, making it the most appropriate model in most applications when combining with a single-speed rear wheel. When riding varying terrain, shifting between the two gears will not dramatically affect your pedaling cadence.

With the addition of the Gates Carbon Drive belt, which has a usable lifespan at least twice as long as a conventional chain (and typically much longer) and does not require lubrication, this is one of the most low maintenance and dependable drivetrains available. This set-up is perfect for a hassle-free commute every day of the week. Whether you are heading to work or across town , you can get on and get going without worrying about your drivetrain.

The Zerode Taniwha has been creating plenty of buzz in internet mountain bike circles for a while now, and for good reason. It’s a sleek, slack, carbon enduro bike that checks off all the boxes of modern mountain bike design. But one thing sets the Taniwha apart from the competition: at its heart is a completely internal shifting system, in the form of a Pinion 12-speed gearbox.

This April, our first Taniwhas landed at Cycle Monkey headquarters and we excitedly built them up. Since then, we’ve been putting the bike through the wringer on some of the most aggressive trails in the country for months on end.

Fresh out of New Zealand - The Zerode Taniwha!

Rather than simply providing a brief overview of the bike, this review seeks to fully assess the Taniwha in terms of its strengths and weaknesses, capability, user experience, and durability.

                Why is This Bike Special?

Over the last few years, I’ve ridden a lot of the most popular trail/enduro offerings from mainstream manufacturers -- the Specialized Enduro, Santa Cruz Nomad, Santa Cruz Bronson, YT Capra, and Scott Genius LT all spring to mind.

The merits of these bikes are clear to anyone who has ever ridden one. Stiff carbon frames paired with progressive geometry make for some of the most capable descenders out there. What’s more, most modern long travel bikes can get you to the top of the hill for your next lap without any fuss.

But while I’ve had plenty of good times aboard these bikes, I’ve also had plenty of rides that involved smashing my derailleur on rocks, dealing with impaired shifting, and having to replace expensive drivetrain parts.

The holy grail of trail riding? - Crested Butte, CO

That’s where the Zerode Taniwha comes into the picture. For a rider who is constantly looking for the next best thing in mountain bike performance and durability, the Taniwha is immediately intriguing, as it’s a bike that fundamentally seeks to improve the mountain biking experience. How? By producing bikes that not only improve durability, but make performance gains as well. On paper, this sounds like the holy grail of trail riding.

                Fit/Geometry

The Taniwha’s geometry is spot-on for the intent of a bike like this. An appropriately slack 65-degree head angle paired with 431mm chainstays makes for a bike that stays planted while hauling through the rough stuff but still feels playful when things get tight.

Mountain bike geometry is changing a lot these days, and it’s not uncommon for one brand’s Medium to be equivalent to another brand’s Large. Because of this it’s best to figure out what reach works best for you and find your optimal fit. At 5’10”, I’m a Medium on some brands, but am very happy with the 445mm reach on a size Large. If you’re more than a few inches taller than me, you might consider moving up to an XL.

                The Pinion C1.12 Gearbox

At the Taniwha’s heart is the Pinion C1.12 12-speed gearbox. The C1.12’s forged magnesium exterior offers a slightly slimmer profile and easier to produce compared to the machined aluminum shell seen on the brand’s original P-line series of gearboxes. The new material also shaves off about 250g (.5 lbs.), making for a transmission that’s both cheaper and lighter than previous iterations.

Inside the gearbox, two stacks of intermeshed gears offer a whopping 600% range over 12 evenly spaced gears. To put this feat in perspective, SRAM’s Eagle 1x12 setup only gets you 500%, and their 1x11 offers 420%. Pinion has essentially gotten us back to the wide range offered by triple ring setups, but with none of the downsides of running a derailleur.

Since the gears are housed inside a shell, they’re also completely protected from the elements. Bashing rocks and damaging your derailleur is a thing of the past. This also means the gearbox will always shift the same, regardless of conditions. Cover it with mud, dirt, and snow – the gearbox just doesn’t care.

What’s more, Pinion expects its gearboxes to easily run for 100,000 miles with almost no maintenance. Pinion simply recommends that you change the oil bath in the gearbox annually, which can be accomplished in a few minutes with a $15 syringe kit. And like anything else on your bike that uses cables, occasional shifter cable replacement will keep the shifting feeling buttery smooth.

                Build Options

When sold as a frame, the Taniwha comes as a $5,000 package that includes a rear shock and complete drivetrain. This works out to ~$3,300 for the frame and rear shock, $1,300 for the gearbox, $400 for cranks, chainring, rear cog, and chain tensioner. Cheap? Nope. But compared to most other high-end carbon frames decked out with a quality shock and a complete Eagle drivetrain, you’ll find that you’re going to be spending about the same amount. Factor in the nearly nonexistent cost of drivetrain upkeep, and the Taniwha starts to look mighty appealing.

                Graphite

The Taniwha is also sold as a complete bike in three different build kits, priced at $6,600, $7,700, and $9,500. The top end Signature build features carbon rims and cockpit bits, with suspension duties handled with premium parts from Cane Creek. The two other builds are more modestly spec’d, with WTB i29 rims, alloy cockpits, and Rockshox forks.

For 2018, the bike is also available in a blinged-out Cane Creek edition, complete with Industry Nine wheels and a choice of coil or air suspension.

                Riding the Taniwha

                Descending

Point the bike down a rocky descent and prepare to be amazed. The bike’s sensitivity over small bumps is simply unprecedented by any derailleur bike I have ever ridden. Even a full-on downhill bike doesn’t eat up high speed chatter this well. This is all due to the bike’s lack of unsprung weight – taking the weight of a derailleur and cassette off the end of your swingarm means that it takes a lot less force to get the rear suspension moving. The result is a bike that feels extremely composed when carrying speed over a bunch of fast successive hits.

This improvement isn’t subtle either -- it’s so noticeable that any time I got back on a derailleur bike, the suspension felt “just okay” at best.

                Grand Junction, CO

Cornering and jumping the Taniwha feels very natural because of the extra pop and flickability that comes from the bike’s neutral, centered mass. It feels as if the weight of the gearbox acts as a pivot point that the rest of the bike moves around as you slash your way through corners and find natural take-offs on a technical trail.

In general, many bikes in this category sacrifice some playfulness for all-out stability, while other bikes dance around nicely at lower speed, but tend to be a little less confident when you really open up. Because of where the weight is located on the Taniwha, the bike manages to embody both characteristics, making for what I can only describe as an awe-inspiring descender.

                Pedaling Performance

With 160mm of travel front and rear, I expected the Taniwha to be a capable descender. What I didn’t expect was how good this thing is at climbing.

This is mostly due to the bike’s fixed chainline. On a traditional derailleur bike, the chain changes its angle in relation to the rest of the bike whenever you shift it, meaning that pedaling effects the suspension differently in different gears. So you’ll get different “squatting” or “bobbing” behaviors depending on what gear you’re in. On the other hand, the Taniwha’s chainline remains constant no matter what gear the bike is in, so the frame can be designed to have perfect pedaling characteristics in every gear.

These attributes make the bike a superb technical climber. Pedal bob isn’t apparent when hammering on the bike, but the suspension stays supple and responsive to bumps when the shock is left open. The result is a bike that offers nearly endless traction when crawling up anything steep and loose.

                Shifting

In terms of the operation of the bike, Pinion’s twist shifter is the thing that takes the most getting used to, and in some cases, completely deters people from giving the Taniwha a try. For this crowd, it’s worth noting that Pinion will release a trigger shifter sometime next year. That said, I’d encourage any rider to give it a try because of the distinct advantages in can offer in conjunction with the Pinion system.

At first, there’s the odd feeling of not having your muscle memory in tune with the bike. You hammer on the pedals, and the twist shifter becomes harder to rotate, which can kill your momentum as you struggle up a hill in the wrong gear.

But after a few rides, something clicks.

For a split second, you reduce power slightly, right as you’re about to move the shifter. You don’t need to backpedal, or even stop pedaling. Just reduce the amount torque you’re putting through the drivetrain, and instantaneously pop the bike into your desired gear. Nail the timing, and you’ll be able to shift through gears while standing up and pedaling up steep, technical terrain with no issue.

Then there’s this wonderful realization that you no longer have to shift through one gear at a time or even pedal to change gears. Going from a high gear to a low gear is as simple as selecting the desired gear and pedaling. No more delicately shifting the chain across the entire cassette when a sudden incline sneaks up on you. Suddenly, I had instant access to any gear I wanted.

At this point, the unwritten “rules” about how and when you shift a mountain bike changed forever. I found myself throwing the bike into a corner, downshifting in the apex of the corner, and then sprinting out in the perfect gear. Terrain with sudden changes in slope became easier to ride, since I was never waiting for the chain to move across the cassette into the right gear. I even found myself purposefully shifting the bike in the air.

                Durability

The frame has its fair share of scratches and chips, but damage appears to be solely cosmetic.

The gearbox itself is still running smoothly, and if the lifespan of the similarly engineered Rohloff Speedhub is any indication, it should keep running for years (maybe even decades) to come.

The Pinion chain tensioner (arguably the only part of the drivetrain that’s remotely exposed) has encountered a few rocks and logs, but since it’s spring-loaded, it simply pivots out of the way when it hits something. No complaints there.

                Final Thoughts

The Zerode Taniwha is a bike that goes back to the drawing board in the name of improving the mountain bike experience. Any brand that embarks upon such a mission is always going to be taking a huge risk, but with the Taniwha, the risk paid off.

Learning to use a new shifting system will take anyone a bit of time, but those who give the gearbox a shot will be rewarded with an almost maintenance-free drivetrain, instantaneous shifting, and best-in-class suspension performance. This is a bike that encourages you to brake less, land farther down the hill, and ride at your limits, literally all the time. And for countless riders out there, this will make the Taniwha a game changer.
